PLMX: Product Lifecycle Management eXchange using open standards

PLMX is a simple, flexible and open product lifecycle management (PLM) data schema and file format. It is intended for use by engineering and manufacturing companies to transfer product data between computer systems within their company and with their supply chain partners.

PLMX file format goals

PLMX simplifies PLM data exchange by providing:

A compact single-file package that includes both product data and related file attachments
Comprehensive item properties necessary for exchanging data between product-focused computer systems
An easily implemented XML-based file format
Free access to the format specifications without licensing fees
Compatibility with other product data exchange formats through published XSLT documents

PLMX product data exchange features

PLMX includes these product exchange features:

XML tags that fully describe the principal attributes of physical parts, documents, and engineering changes
An industry-standard packaging approach that compresses XML data and product file attachments into a single file
Publicly-available XSLT transformation files that convert PLMX XML into commonly-used formats such as Microsoft® Excel XLS.

PLMX is well-suited to smaller companies that require a simple and flexible data exchange format, but are concerned about the complexity and implementation expense associated with some other data exchange methods.
